Recipe in Arabic: شفنج

Sfenj is similar to doughnuts but without the sweetness and it is also lighter. The translation of the word Sfenj is sponge, because they are so light and spongy. This type of pastry is also called: chfenj, shfenj or Moroccan doughnuts. The recipe is very easy to make and should not take a long time to prepare. Simply follow these steps:


Ingedients

  • ½ kg of white flour
  • 2 cups of warm water
  • ½ liter of oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of yeast

Preparation

  1. Mix the flour, and salt, then melt the yeast in a warm cup of water
  2. Mix the flour with the yeasty water until you get a tender dough
  3. Occasionally knead the dough and sprinkle with warm water until it becomes spongy
  4. Rub the dough with oil and let it ferment until it doubles in size
  5. Form small balls and let them rest for 10 minutes
  6. Heat up a frying pan and pour the oil
  7. Wet your hand and puncture a hole inside the dough balls and put in the frying pan
  8. When one side browned, flip to the other side
  9. Serve with hot tea!

You can slightly change the above ingredients and preparation for Sfenj to match your needs and taste.
